Biography

Through her experience in all facets of development, Ms. Gurland has raised over $40 million from foundations and individuals. She has secured grants from many national and local foundations including: Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Kresge Foundation, and William Randolph Hearst Foundation.


Ms. Gurland has a graduate degree from Columbia University, New York, and an undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, from Windham College, Vermont.  She did graduate work at the Monterey Institute for International Studies, California, and the University of New Hampshire.  Before opening her fundraising practice in 1991, she was the director of development for the Currier Gallery of Art, and Brooklyn Law School and staff fundraiser for Bradford College.


Ms. Gurland regularly presents on fundraising topics in the US, and occasionally in the UK and Europe.  A former Senior Fellow of Tufts University’s College of Citizenship and Public Service, she has taught graduate level courses on philanthropy and created special programs for nonprofit CEOs.  As a teacher, she's led courses on proposal writing and donor stewardship for many nonprofit organizations.


Ms. Gurland is an elected member of the Boston Economic Club and the Boston Committee on Foreign Relations. She is a co-leader of the Harvard Club Business and Public Policy Discussion Group. A passionate consumer of arts and culture, she is member of many museums and cultural organizations, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Chinati Foundation, Boston Athenaeum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She is the proud to have received a lifetime membership in the National Trust for Scotland for her services to the organization.
